Roller skiing with the Mathias Hischier Roller Skiing School

Glide instead of struggle – who wouldn't want that? To achieve this, we have a new recommendation for you: Roller skiing training, instead of waiting eight to nine months after the end of the winter season only to find that your confidence in standing perfectly on your skis has once again significantly diminished.

Pros and cons of roller skis / roller skis / roller skis

At first, balancing on roller skis seems more challenging for three reasons:

  • On roller skis, you stand 3 to 5 cm above the ground instead of 2 to 2.5 cm as you are used to with cross-country skis.

  • The roller ski is only approx. 70 cm long instead of the usual approx. 180 cm.

  • The roller width of skating roller skis is only just under 2 cm, compared to an average of 4.4 cm for skating skis.

However, the solution is simple

  • The body must be ‘even more perfectly’ positioned over the ski.
  • Hip extension becomes even more important.
  • Selected exercises on one ski will help you progress quickly.

How high is the risk of falling?

Many people think that the risk of falling is similar to that of inline skating. However, this is not the case for the following reasons:

  • The soft wheels give you significantly higher rolling resistance, which reduces your speed by about a third
  • This gives you the desired training effect with a feeling very similar to cross-country skiing
  • The correct use of the poles gives you a lot of additional control

Amenities

  • You can use your usual skating shoes and poles
  • You feel even safer with a helmet and protective equipment
  • The season lasts 8 months, and in some places all year round
  • The temperatures are usually very pleasant, and on hot days the wind cools you down and the garden restaurants invite you to stop for a break

Where are there suitable routes for roller skiing?

  • To start with, we recommend taking a course on a closed course, e.g. the roller ski track in Ulrichen/Geschinen, Realp or Lenzerheide, school playgrounds, etc.
  • Once you feel confident, there are lots of great cycle paths to try, e.g. Oberwald to Reckingen, Oberengadin, Zugerland, Greifensee, Tösstal, the airport and many more
  • Paved side roads are also very suitable.

When shall we start together?

  • You can register by email, telephone or WhatsApp.
  • Let us know your preferred location.
  • If necessary, we can organise all the equipment.
